Magic in Novus Mundus
Magic has been a strong part of Novus Mundus since the Conflux. Latent arcane energies, more than are found on most planets, penetrate nearly every aspect of the world. It is because of this power that the Novan people were able to survive the Dragon War by erecting the enormous City Shields. It has also lead to an extensive infrastructure based on magic or magically enhanced items.
Chief among the arcane wonders of Novus are the thousands of Gateways and Astria Porta that serve as the only means of transport outside of the cities. While these portals were in use before the start of the Dragon War, after The Shielding they were deemed of planetary importance and were placed under the authority of the Novan Grand Council. The price for the use of a Gateway was standardized at two gold per person. Although each city is allowed to charge customs and other fees for anyone entering their shield.
Closely related to the Gateways are the Wisper Stones. These magical devices were orginally developed as a way wizards to keep tabs on their apprentices when they were out in the field. The first Wisper Stones were limited to a single linked pair and had a relatively short range. The current generation Stones are significantly more advanced. Stones come in two varieties. The first type are similar to the original Wisper Stones in that they must be linked to specific other stones. Unlike their predecessors, current mobile Wisper Stones can be linked to up to four other stones and have a range that will reach to neighboring cities. In addition to these mobile stones there are also stationary stones. The stationary stones are connected to a worldwide network which allows any stone to speak to any other stone on the network.
